Bath & Body Works Pulls Candle After Packaging Controversy

October 22, 2024

When we work on brand packaging, logo design, or any other form of creative work for our clients, we check every angle. It's why Something Great has consistently been voted a top design agency in both Canada and the US - be sure to get in touch with us if you need support from our brand and design studio.

We wish, oh how do we wish, that Bath & Body Works would've given us a call.

The nostalgic mall favorite known for its fall and holiday candles, found itself in hot water this week. The company had to pull its Snowed In candle after customers pointed out that the snowflake design on the label resembled KKK hoods.

Yup, you read that right.

Oh no. Photo: Bath & Body Works

The candle’s design sparked immediate backlash on social media, with a viral Reddit post asking, "I know it’s one of those paper snowflakes, but I can’t be the only one who sees ‘it,’ right?" Within 48 hours, Bath & Body Works pulled the product from stores and online. The company issued an apology, stating, “We are committed to listening to our teams and customers and fixing any mistakes — even unintentional ones.”

This isn’t the first design mishap for the brand. In 2022, it faced criticism for using kente-inspired patterns on Black History Month packaging.

It seems their creative team might need to revisit their approach.
